Perisex[1], also referred to as endosex[2], juxtasex[3], or dyadic refers to the state of having been born with and naturally developed sex traits typically associated with male or female biological sexes.[4][5]

The prefix peri- means around, surrounding or near.

The term has several names, there is no clear census on which one is best to use and so are used interchangeably.[6][7][8]

Term Relationship Description Difference

Intersex Opposite Those born with physical sex characteristics that cannot be traditionally classified as wolffian (male) or müllerian (female). Perisex individuals typically can be traditionally classified.

History

The term Perisex was initially referred to as Dyadic, which potentially has been in use since the 1970s.[9] There has been several names for those who are not intersex as there is no clear consensus of what the term’s name should be with many individuals putting together their ideas.[3] The term Perisex came around in November 2014 as an alternative to Dyadic, using the prefix peri- to mean ‘near’ or ‘around’ as a way of expressing those who are closer to the western construction of male and female.[1]

The term Dyadic is considered controversial by many intersex individuals who express because it means ‘two’ that it reinforces the sex binary, which many think of as false.[1][10]

However, Perisex is considered itself controversial with some individuals claiming it was created by non-intersex individuals who hated being called Dyadic[11][12], or simply disliking that they want to shy away from being non-intersex.[13][14] Whilst also prefer the initial term Dyadic because they feel it is “less confusing” or just a dislike for the term or preferences for other terms that have been coined.[15][16]

There have been other terms created for it, including;

  • Juxtasex, a term which uses a prefix meaning ‘close to’.[3]
  • Endosex, a term which uses the prefix endo meaning ‘internal’, the term is considered to be controversial due to coiner Heike Boedeker being called an autogynephilla activist.[16][17]

Flags

The first known flag to be created for Perisex/Dyadic was created on or before August 4th 2016 by Deviantart user FlagsforCisHets.[18]

Tumblr user Clowncaraz created an alternate flag on or before August 23rd 2024. The user wrote the meaning as such:

“this is a perisex flag I made that shows a cut purple box with a periwinkle background. purple symbolizing the mix of red and blue, the box symbolizing the parallel of both müllerian and wolffian traits appearing in a singular individual without them being interconnected or imbalanced, and the sun on top of the box representing two halves of one coin (müllerian and wolffian).[19]

Tumblr user Intervex created several proposed redesigns with input from Tumblr user Clowncaraz's alternate design and created an alternate flag in September 2024.[20]

Another flag was created by Intervex on or before October 6th 2024.[21]
