Fray, also known as Ignota, is an orientation prefix encompassing the attraction only to strangers or those one is not deeply or emotionally connected to. This attraction often fades when one gets to know the target of attraction, or when a deep or emotional connection is formed.[1][2][3]
The prefix fray- was chosen, as it allegedly means stranger in Olde English, and ash tree in Old French, but no resources were presented to prove these definitions, and they are not recognised as definitions in any current multilingual dictionaries.[1][4] Fray- instead may be related to the English word fray, meaning "wear off", or "to wear away", representing the attraction that often wears off.[4]
The prefix ignota- derives form the Latin word ignota, which is the feminine declension of ignotus, an adjective to describe someone or something that is unknown, foreign, or unacquainted with.[5]
History
Fraysexual and frayromantic were coined by edensmachine on or before the 18th of July, 2014.[1] Ignotasexual and ignotaromantic were coined by aroacesafespace on or before the 14th of December, 2014.[2]

Flags and Symbols
The fraysexual flag was created by pridearchive in 2015. The blue and cyan was chosen to represent unfamiliar relationships with others (such as strangers and acquaintances), as well as being complementary colours to red and yellow, which often symbolise romantic and platonic love. White represents the lack of attraction, and grey represents the confusion when confronted with fraysexual or frayromantic attraction.[12]
The frayromantic flag was created by an anonymous Wiki user, on the 19th of October, 2020. The flag is a flipped version of the fraysexual flag, with an additional grey stripe, and the shades of blue are tinted slightly more green to represent the aromantic spectrum.[11]
The fraysexual and frayromantic symbols were designed by wiki user WiiFyneLM. The frayromantic symbol is a modified version of the demiromantic symbol, where the black triangle of the demisymbol symbol is cut out of the heart shape. A vertically centred horizontal line was added, so as to avoid the fraysexual symbol being mistaken for Pac-Man.[13][14]
The alternate frayalterous flag was created by elhazelenby on the 29th of June, 2021.[15]
