Category talk:Artifact Compression

From LGBTQIA

Is this category for flags that are in .jpg form that should be converted to .png? Or it is more complicated than that? - Net

It's a little more complicated. JPG/JPEG are known as lossy compression formats. When they are compressed, they cannot be uncompressed. When they compress, they lose data, which is why they're called lossy compression. So whilst you can still convert JPG to PNG, you still can't get that extra data back because you used a JPG format, and you will see the same artifact compression in the PNG. To get rid of artifact compression in PNGs, you essentially have to recreate the image/flag from scratch. Jeb_CC, Bureaucrat | (xe/xem/xir) (talk) 03:32, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
